Snake Scare
After Hurricane Irma passed through my neighborhood, the screens on our back porch were torn down. Living in a wild life preserve and on a lake I expected to see nature traveling on my lanai floor. This creature was pointed out to us by our brave guardian cat, King Pelu. He was sitting, staring into the corner. We had no idea what was there. On closer inspection, my husband saw this tail and, then the head of a very long and creepy looking snake. We were told it’s poisonous. I suppose it’s the reason our cat was just staring. I quickly took these two photos while screaming and running in the opposite direction. I was saved by the two men in my life: my hubby and my cat.
If you know anything about snakes, could you tell me what type this is and if it’s dangerous?

Sure looks like a King snake to me which are often mistaken for Coral snakes. The Eastern Coral snake is red, black and yellow. There’s an old rhyme we learned as kid that goes “black on yellow, watch that fellow. Black on red, have no dread.

Thank you for the information, Henry. I’m not a fan of snakes. I wouldn’t go near one.
But, I appreciate knowing what it might have been. Thank you for visiting and leaving your informative comment
and helpful rhyme.

Yikes! I’m only afraid of the poisonous snakes. Trouble is, I don’t know which ones are poisonous! 🐉 😬

I don’t like any snakes. They’re creepy. I think your right – how do you know a poisonous one from one that isn’t? Now, that our screens have all been replaced I feel so much better. Thank for leaving your funny comment. It made me smile. 😄

I don’t think it was there too long. Our cat is a good hunter. He would have found him eventually. I think the cat knew he was poisonous. He never tried to bite it. I’m happy about that. Eeekkk … snakes are creepy. 😩 I’m glad I didn’t have to get rid of it. Guess I’ll keep hubby. LOLOL

YUP … coral snake it is. Real happy hubby was able to get it out. I thought it best not to ask how he did. : )

I’m sure by now you’ve googled coral snakes. It sure looks like one. I’m guessing the head shape is do to how it was dispatched. Thank goodness for guard cats and husbands.

I’ve heard from a few and from google that it’s a very poisonous coral snake.
I didn’t ask hubby how he got it out of our lanai. I felt it would be best not to know.
Thanks Carol for the info. I hope I never see another.
