Ladyslipper Pretty in Pink

Cypripedium (aka Ladyslipper Orchids) are by far, the showiest and most popular of the hardy terrestrial orchids. There are 48 species total in northern temperate land masses around the world. The majority are in East Asia. There are 11 species of Cypripedium native to the United States, found in every state except for Florida, Hawaii, and Nevada.

The name Cypripedium comes from a mix of Latin and Greek. It alludes to Cyprus, the island that was the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite (Venus) and ‘pedilum’, a shoe or slipper (or feet), and so literally means Aphrodite’s Slipper.

    • I believe they’re called pitcher plants. This may be another species.
It was a rare one at an orchid show I attended. I was tempted to purchase it.
The cost was a bit steep. I was concerned it would die. I hope to see the fella this year.
I’ll ask him more about it if he’s there and post an update. Thanks …

  2. Ah, miss Orchid Lady!!!!! I should know this one, but I didn’t! And they do look like slippers/sandals [Greek word for sandal is pedilum – pedilo]. Beautiful! 🙂 Happy weekend, my friend! 🙂 xoxoxoxo

      • Yeah – well maybe it was meant to be to not have it – these orchids are the most persnickety and sensitive flowers I have ever seen. I just saw some tall beauties (not lady slippers) for a good price (12.99 each) and walked right on by – I will enjoy them from a distance (like good blog pics you shared ) ha
