Ladyslipper Pretty in Pink
Cypripedium (aka Ladyslipper Orchids) are by far, the showiest and most popular of the hardy terrestrial orchids. There are 48 species total in northern temperate land masses around the world. The majority are in East Asia. There are 11 species of Cypripedium native to the United States, found in every state except for Florida, Hawaii, and Nevada.
The name Cypripedium comes from a mix of Latin and Greek. It alludes to Cyprus, the island that was the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite (Venus) and ‘pedilum’, a shoe or slipper (or feet), and so literally means Aphrodite’s Slipper.

This orchid is a bit rare. It was $40.00 doallars. I’d hate to purchase and have it die on me. LOL
YUP … I walked on by. : 0 : )

I’ve never seen these at all or even heard of them. They look a bit like pitcher plants!

I believe they’re called pitcher plants. This may be another species.
It was a rare one at an orchid show I attended. I was tempted to purchase it.
The cost was a bit steep. I was concerned it would die. I hope to see the fella this year.
I’ll ask him more about it if he’s there and post an update. Thanks …

I think most of the orchids with pouches like that don’t have leaves. I need to go to another orchid show. LOL

News to me. Lady slippers around here are belladonna lilies. I’ll see if I can find my photos of them. And I thought these you posted were Venus fly traps. Boy am I wrong!

Click on the name of the orchid. It will take you to the web-site. I photographed this orchid at an orchid show. I couldn’t find the info I had written down that day. I didn’t buy the plant. Each time I see the photo I think about the fact that I missed purchasing such an unusual orchid. Are they called Belladonna Lilies? I couldn’t find the exact ones in the photo. Thanks, Carol. Have a super weekend … Izzy 😎

I did the same thing with that lady slipper plant. I saw it and didn’t buy it. I wasn’t sure I could keep it alive. It needs too hot moist air b
The naked ladies are officially amaryllis belladonna. They grow in gardens and wild on hillsides around here.

I was hesitant because it was very expensive and, like you, I was fearful it would die. Ahhh … maybe, next time. : )

I don’t expect the little $6 orchid I bought yesterday to live very long. The lady slipper I ran across probably was expensive too. Maybe Trader Joe’s will have them some day

This one in the photograph was $40 dollars. I love growing orchids and do well with many but at that price I wasn’t feeling very confident. I manage to purchase some really nice orchids at the local orchid club in town. They bring small cuttings to the meetings for purchase or donations to the raffle held. I think that’s more my speed. : )

Ah, miss Orchid Lady!!!!! I should know this one, but I didn’t! And they do look like slippers/sandals [Greek word for sandal is pedilum – pedilo]. Beautiful! 🙂 Happy weekend, my friend! 🙂 xoxoxoxo

I wish I had purchased this orchid at an orchid show I attended. I think about it each time I see the photos. I haven’t seen one since. Thanks … glad you liked my selection.

Yeah – well maybe it was meant to be to not have it – these orchids are the most persnickety and sensitive flowers I have ever seen. I just saw some tall beauties (not lady slippers) for a good price (12.99 each) and walked right on by – I will enjoy them from a distance (like good blog pics you shared ) ha
