Lens Artists Challenge – Surprise
This train car is an example of the type of transportation
the circus animals were in while traveling from state to state.
One of my granddaughter worked as office staff at the circus in Sarasota, Florida while attending college.
She had complimentary tickets for family. We went with some of the grandkids.
It was our last visit to the circus. As much as it saddened me to see it close, I’m happy it did.
The animals weren’t always treated in the best way. PITA had a right to voice their dislike of the animal cruelty.
You can imagine my ‘Surprise’ to see this poor little monkey with a heavy, heavy chain around his neck.
Unacceptable!

You can imagine my ‘Surprise’ when I saw this man going past me with a snake on his shoulders.

Sarasota, Florida is where the John & Mabel Ringling Circus owners used to vacation during their summers.
There is a museum dedicated to the circus with miniatures on display.
Their home is a museum with extensive art and furniture. It’s a wonderful place to visit.
They were major contributors to the arts. They created a well-known art school.
The circus has closed.

The chain around the neck is tragic and I prefer not to wear the snake necklace, but I did once unexpectedly. Years ago I went to pick up my daughter at I children’s party. I was chatting to the father in the living room an all of a sudden felt something cold around my neck. My daughters put a living pet snake on my neck. I think it is a good thing I went to pick her up, my wife would probably have died…

I agree with you about the lil monkey. Sad!!!
I’m sure your wife would have been as frightened as I was. After a,, these are wild animals. Thank you, Abrie, for visiting and commenting.

A great post – history to us all. Circuses were touring our country when I was a child too. I always felt sorry for the animals, but was in awe as a small child. Some surprising shots, really, Isadora. Nowadays i enjoy Cirque de Soleil.

I didn’t know where I was going with this post. I knew the snake and monkey pics were good surprise
pics but then I wanted to show something about the circus which is where I took them.
I’m happy you enjoyed the way I took on the challenge, Leya. I’m always fascinated with the way others approach the challenge.
I used to attend the circus as a child too. I never thought about the animals being mistreated. It was always so grand.
I’ve attended many, many of the Cirque de Soleil shows. I think they’re magnificent.

A surprising story and a sad treatment of the circus animals. I’m glad it closed, too. It is just so inhumane to treat animals that way. Your surprise shots are really surprising. Great captures.

I never tire of visiting this museum. A mere 30 minutes from where I live.
There’s a great deal of history plus they have concerts on the balcony overlooking Sarasota Bay.
The miniatures took years to create and put into dioramas. Thanks, for stopping by, John.

Wow. You are a lucky person. FAN-tastic place. ‘Ca’ d’Zan’. Love that house, too. I’m glad they are for ‘public consumption’ now.

Me too … it’s a lovely way to give back to the community they enjoyed. You’ll have to visit 👍😄😎 Florida and see it in person.
