A Photo a Week – 100 Years Old
These ornate sculptures of the Madonna and Child are housed at the John and Mabel Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. The figures celebrate Mary, the Mother of Jesus, who has inspired artisans, crusaders, saints and mothers worldwide. The sculpted figures express virtues. Mary’s character illustrates devotion, mercy, compassion and deep love.

Images of the Virgin and Child were virtually everywhere in the Renaissance home.
In the 1300’s and 1400’s representations of the Virgin and Child became increasingly popular.

Images like these emphasize the relationship between mother and child
and promote the Virgin’s role as intercessor for the salvation of humankind.

This relief sculpture is meant to recall carved marble, rather than the more inexpensive terra-cotta of which it was made. The sculptural quality of the figures in the painted image also point to the artist’s interest in three-dimensional sculpted models.

Such rich colours considering the age, things like this aren’t made anymore are they?

The colors are very vibrant in person. I leaned that photographing anything in a museum damages the colors.
This museum is filled with ancient art. I enjoy visiting it often. Thanks, Gilly …
